The challenge

Can Tho Kitchen Bar is a Vietnamese restaurant run by husband and wife team Vien and Tara. When Tara’s mother retired, the couple could have continued to operate the restaurant unchanged, but inspiringly, they decided to stand out by personalising their restaurant with new branding and interiors.

Vien and Tara approached Harmonica with the brief to create a contemporary brand that communicated the authentic nature of its heritage.

The strategy

Our focus was very much to reflect the family story of the restaurant. We began to discover the fascinating story behind how the family moved to Australia, set up the restaurant and then passed it down through generations. We combined various graphic elements to create a brand that communicated this unique story.

Significant dates were incorporated into a stamp motif that referenced travel and postage. Family photographs from refugee camps were used to create a composite block print image. Vietnamese letterforms were researched and referenced to add hints of the name as it might appear in Vietnam. A modern approach was given to all visual components – creating a sense of contemporary dining savviness whilst referencing the tradition of the family story.
